Just A Thought: The Time Keeper

time keeperJust A Thought: The Time Keeper

From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Tuesdays With Morrie, Mitch Albom has done it again. In his novel, The Time Keeper, he takes the reader on a journey to discover the true meaning of time.

In this thought-provoking and imaginative story, Albom, begins to tell the story of Father Time. When Father Time was just a little boy named Dor, he became engrossed in measuring and counting everything. He counted the breaths he took, the steps he took, and he even measured how much water it took for the sun to go down. Ultimately, Dor became fascinated with measuring time. The story takes a twist when he is punished for his obsession and exiled to a cave for centuries, where he listens to voices asking for just a little more time. He tried everything he could think of to escape but to no avail. He was seemingly doomed to be stuck in the cave forever.

Eventually, however, he was freed on one condition. He had to go to earth and teach two earthly people the true meaning of time. Along with his magical hourglass and his newfound freedom, Father Time leaves on a journey that will not only help two people learn the meaning of time but will also help him better understand time as well.
Father time returns to earth and learns that everything is dominated by counting, something he invented a long time ago. As he continues his journey, the reader is introduced to two people that Father Time heard wishing for more time.

Sarah Lemon was a teenager and wished for more time to prepare for her first date with Ethan, someone she thought would never pay attention to her. On weekends, Ethan volunteers at the same homeless shelter as Sarah. He starts to flirt with her and Sarah can hardly believe he is interested in her. She doesn’t have any friends, she’s awkward, her parents are divorced, and she is an overachiever when it comes to
grades. She wants date night to be perfect. What will she even wear?

Victor Delamonte, the second voice that Dor heard, was a successful businessman and was used to getting everything he wanted, except for now. He has discovered that he is dying of cancer and tries desperately to find a way to escape the inevitable. He believes that he can buy his way into immortality. In his quest to prolong his life, he stumbles upon
cryonics. He concocts a plan that will surely extend his life.

TIME… We all want more of it.

More time to finish a project that has been looming over our heads at work.
More time to spend with family and friends.
More time to sleep.
More time to exercise.
More time to relax.
More time to take a vacation.
More… more… more.

We only get twenty-four hours in a day. What will you do with it? Instead of complaining that you need more time, take the time you have and use it wisely.

“There is a reason God limits our days.”
“Why?”
“To make each one precious.”
—Mitch Albom, The Time Keeper
